Former Yonkers priest helps immigrants in Poughkeepsie

The Rev. Jose Mena, a Nicaraguan immigrant priest who formerly ministered at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Yonkers, has helped the Hispanic immigrant community at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Poughkeepsie establish a separate non-profit organization.

Self-Deportation program unsuccessful

The Associated Press is reporting that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency is ending its three-week “Scheduled Departure” program. Only eight people participated in the program for illegal immigrants who have received orders of deportation to avoid jail time by turning themselves in to the agency.
