A man arrested for misdemeanor drunk driving in Brewster July 3 pleaded guilty yesterday, received a $1,000 fine and then was cuffed and taken away in an SUV by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It was an unusual appearance by ICE at the Brewster court, according to village police.
The case had received an unusual amount of media attention because of a few similarities to the Brewster drunk-driving crash that killed a mother and daughter last month. Danbury resident Segundo Ordonez Tanay was in the country illegally, had no valid license and was driving his employer’s truck erratically down Main Street, according to police. Marcela Rojas has a story in today’s Journal News.

Appearing before a village justice, the Ecuadorian construction worker was advised that his guilty plea could jeopardize any future immigration application. Afterward, Ordonez went into a room with ICE agents, and his brother and attorney came to look for him. His wallet and cell phone were passed out the door to his brother.
Ed Kowalski of 9/11 Families for a Secure America had been among those who doubted Ordonez would show up for court, as he was out on bail.
After watching the man being taken away, Kowalski said, “At the end of the day, this is what should be happening.”
