Westchester’s Bronx connection

July
9

Westchester County executive candidate Rob Astorino angered more than a few people when he seemed to blame an influx of illegal immigrants and Bronxites for driving up local property taxes. These groups “need services,” he said on News 12. Setting aside the complex issues of services — who’s eligible for them, who receives them and who pays for them — the candidate was onto one thing: Westchester receives more people from the Bronx than from any other county in the United States.

The Bronx accounts for the biggest group of newcomers, with household incomes averaging around $50,000. But another sizeable group comes from Manhattan, with incomes approaching $200,000.

County Movers Income % Change in income (since 1999)
Bronx 7,405 $50,432 +7%
Manhattan 4,279 $196,473 +19%
Queens 1,575 $66,370 +7%
Fairfield 1,276 $93,070 +25%
Brooklyn 708 $75,195 +12%
Putnam 596 $63,141 +1%

Tim Henderson from the Journal News data desk generated this chart by looking at IRS records showing county-to-county migration, based on tax returns. (This would not reflect people moving in internationally, or people who don’t file tax returns.) The final column shows how quickly incomes are rising in each group. Incomes are much lower on average among the Bronx group, along with those from Putnam and Queens. Whether they “need services” as a group remains open to debate. One could argue that the Manhattanites and hedge-fund types coming from Fairfield, Conn., are helping to drive up housing prices and therefore, taxes. But I wouldn’t expect that debate to end any time soon.

Hey Leah are you ever going to do a story on the down side
of illegal immigration or are you just going to continue to
support law breakers? What kind of reporter doesn’t show
both sides of a story or issue?

    Bulldog-

That seemed like a pretty objective post to me. It’s just a chart detailing county-to-county migration trends. The bigger point, though, is that supporting racism and hate language isn’t showing the “down side of illegal immigration.” It’s just being ignorant.

  3. BULLDOG

Have you followed this blog at all Longislandwins? Every story on this blog is PRO illegal alien. That’s what i’m talking about. There is nothing racist about wanting our laws enforced. Leave it to a LI Lib to join in on the
left wing pro criminal circus. All i’m asking for is fair
and balanced reporting on this issue and we NEVER get it.
