What it means to ‘get in line’

Reason magazine has tried to boil down the process of immigrating to the United States into a flow chart, sort of Chutes-and-Ladders style. That’s no easy task. There are two versions; here’s the more detailed one. Click here to read it in PDF form.

Here’s the cartoon version. (Note the characters being booted out the door, or growing beards from waiting so long.) Click here to read the PDF.

This project by the Reason Foundation makes an argument for more work visas, but I think people on any side of the debate can learn something from the charts. (Let us know what you think.)
They highlight a simple fact that often gets overlooked, even though it seems so central to our current situation. If you’re an unskilled applicant with no relatives in the United States, here’s the deal:
SORRY! Unlike previous periods in our history, there is virtually no process for unskilled immigrants without family relations in the US to apply for permanent legal residence. Only 10,000 green cards are alloted every year and the wait time approaches infinity. (Those who receive H-2A or H-2B temporary visas for seasonal work cannot transition into a green card.)
