Mississippi raid: 595 arrested by ICE

August
27

During Monday’s immigration raid in Laurel, Miss., plant workers were separated into two lines, Hispanic and non-Hispanic, according to the Hattiesburg American. Agents sealed the exits and sprayed a worker with Mace, the workers said.laurel.jpg

ICE’s largest sweep happened to come at the opening of the Democratic National Convention, where a panel was discussing the immigration and detention system. New America Media quotes Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California, who doesn’t hold back:

Everything with our current immigration enforcement is a failure, starting with ICE … Roughly 30,000 ICE workers lack qualifications.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement gives its tally in this release: 595 were arrested, including eight who face criminal identity-theft charges. Most, about 475, were taken into detention in Jena, La., and 106 were released for humanitarian reasons and ordered to appear in court. Nine 17-year-olds were transferred to the Office of Refugee Resettlement.

Only about 49 million to go, but hey! It’s a good start!
