The Providence Journal reports here on discussions among police departments and ICE officials in Rhode Island. The governor has directed state police and corrections officials to work closely with ICE, and urged local departments to check the immigration status of suspects.
This was one of the policies that served as a model for New York Assemblyman Greg Ball’s proposal. In Rhode Island, the issue flared up when a man was arrested in a rape and carjacking incident; he had been ordered deported and previously arrested on a misdemeanor. Apparently there was finger-pointing between Providence police and ICE over why he was still in the country.
Meanwhile, clergy members in Providence also met on the immigration issue. Rhode Island’s Catholic bishop is calling for an end to immigration raids, and said in a letter that agents should be able to opt out as conscientious objectors.
