Westchester’s Hispanic festival, from Uruguay to Mexico

July
24

When you hold a Hispanic festival in Westchester, you have a lot of nationalities to cover.

heritage.jpgThis year’s 27th Annual Hispanic Heritage Festival on Sunday will include singer Jorge Yépez from Ecuador, Gran Murga Uruguaya from Uruguay and Mariachi Aguila y Plata from Mexico, to name a few. Click here for details. Here’s a video recap of last year’s festival, with Alfredo Dueñas singing the theme song called “Somos,” or “We Are.”

Read on for an English translation of the lyrics, which were written by Alfredo’s wife, Mariana. They wanted the song to get to the common ground shared by immigrants.

“We Are”

In life there comes a time
When a challenge comes alive,
Not as easy as it may seem
To find hope and reach a dream.

Aware of perils we may find
Leaving most we love behind,
We decide to find the moment
Armed with magic to help us through.

Let’s give it all we have
That is something we know well
Take a risk, embrace the changes,
This is it, this is our moment!

A mirror of challenges, we are,
A certainty of a driving force, we are
Our passion flows from deep inside:
We are Hispanic-America!

Let’s now discover new horizons,
Let’s play a part and grow with actions,
Let’s all be proud, our colors are so awesome
Let’s put on view the magic when they blossom…

In life there comes a time
When a lengthy bridge appears,
Leading you to a brighter future,
Always evoke who you are!

A mirror of challenges, we are,
A certainty of a driving force, we are
Our passion flows from deep inside:
We are Hispanic-America!
