John Jay College to hold forum: ‘Immigration, Justice and Crime’

May
29

I’m looking forward to Monday’s forum at John Jay College: “Immigration, Justice and Crime: Where do we go from here?” It will bring together a mixed crowd, everyone from a WBAI talk show host to Assemblyman Greg Ball.

Ball, R-Carmel, is scheduled to be on a panel with the Mayor of New Haven, John DeStefano, moderated by the editor of El Diario newspaper. DeStefano is best known in the immigration world for the creation of municipal ID cards which, among other things, can help undocumented residents open a bank account. (Although DeStefano got major press over this, I don’t think it was that unusual a policy. I’ve heard stories of Westchester residents using their county pool pass as an ID at the bank.)

Anyway, this video from another panel discussion gives you an idea of DeStefano’s views. He calls out hate groups, including one that he says is filming him, and criticizes political leaders who stay silent when immigrants are treated as scapegoats.
