A relief effort for hometowns in Haiti

April
15

Four organizations in Rockland are teaming up on a long-term relief effort for Haiti to address the food crisis there. And to make sure the donations reach the people in need, organizers will use their existing connections through faith-based groups and family members. Immigrants will use their connections in their hometowns to help oversee the shipments.

The campaign is targeting four communities in particular: Bainet, Camp Perrin, Leogane and Ouanaminthe, said Ron Figueroa, co-chair of the Rockland Immigration Coalition. He and other organizers decided that direct food delivery is a better strategy than donations of money, given the inflated cost of food in Haiti. “Money does not go very far in Haiti right now,” he said today at a meeting in Spring Valley.

The groups taking part are the immigration coalition, the Ramapo Haitian Task Force, Konbit Neg Lakay and HACSO. To contribute toward the purchase of food to be sent to Haiti, checks are being made out to Konbit Neg Lakay for the “Emergency Relief Fund.” Click here for KNL’s web site.
