Call for Latino council candidates in Mount Vernon

January
31

A recently formed political action group, Union Latina, in Mount Vernon is calling for Latino candidates to be considered for a vacant City Council seat.
So far, two Latinos have applied for the position.
The group was formed by Board of Education trustee Maria Cedano and others to increase voter participation, tackle issues affecting the Latino community, conduct voters registration drive, hold citizenship educational programs, provide workshops on immigration issues and support candidates for national, state, and local offices.
The group says it will serve as a vehicle to exchange information and train and develop Latino leadership.
According to U.S. Census data, Hispanics make up 13 percent of the city’s population. West Indians, another group seeking representation on the council, make up 16 percent.
Union Latina members include Dominicans, Brazilians, Puerto Ricans, Panamanians and others.
