Michael Rights wins in Southeast

The local election that fixated on day labor and illegal immigration is finally resolved today: Michael Rights will become the next supervisor of Southeast, the town that surrounds Brewster.
Absentee ballots were opened this morning, giving him a 19-vote edge over Brewster Mayor John Degnan. It was a squeaker that might have turned out differently if it hadn’t been a three-way race. Lorraine Mitts, a Southeast councilwoman, came in a distant third.
Rights’ “Save Our Southeast” ticket sent out campaign literature raising the specter of illegal alien gang activity in the area and promising a crackdown on Brewster’s numerous day laborers. As Marcela Rojas has reported, immigrants and Brewster merchants were watching the election carefully: Many worry that an anti-immigrant climate will cause the village’s growing Hispanic businesses to shut down.

If you are legal you have nothing to worry about. If you are
Illegal you should have something to worry about. Why would
this have anything to do with hispanic businesses if the owners are legal? If their customers are illegal to bad.
Er, do you think that the only businesses that they patronize are hispanic businesses? Do you think that those of us who are LEGAL will patronize any business in this town if they continues on this course?

Surrounded -the town was just fine before the Illegals came
or even the legal hispanics. I’m sure it will do just fine
without them. New businesses will open and the place might
